The general list of documents required for inheritance always begins with the heir's passport, taxpayer identification number (TIN), and the deceased person's death certificate. You will also need documents confirming your family relationship with the deceased, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce certificate, or name change certificate, depending on the degree of kinship under which you inherit. If the inheritance is based on a will, the original will or information about its registration in the Ukrainian Inheritance Register must be provided to the notary. If there is no will, the inheritance is distributed according to the law, and the order of succession depends on the degree of relationship with the deceased.

Another important group of documents concerns the inherited property itself. To register an inherited apartment, you will generally need the title deed, the technical passport, and an extract from the State Register of Property Rights. When inheriting a house, additional documents relating to the land plot on which the house is located may also be required, as the house and land are often registered separately. Registering inherited land requires either the state land ownership document or an extract from the land register, as well as information about the property's assessed value as of the date of the deceased's death. If the estate includes bank accounts, vehicles, corporate rights, or other assets, the notary will require a separate package of supporting documents for each asset.

Inheritance proceedings are opened by a notary at the deceased person's last place of residence. The notary who opens the inheritance file is also responsible for issuing the Certificate of Inheritance after the legal requirements have been fulfilled. In practice, inheriting property after the death of parents is often complicated by missing documents, such as a lost title deed to a house, an unregistered land plot, or inconsistencies in the spelling of names across official documents. In such situations, the missing information must be restored through archives, public registers, or, if that is impossible, through court proceedings establishing legally significant facts for inheritance purposes.
